About us

Our Vision

We believe that every animal's life matters. While we may not be able to change the world overnight, we refuse to let that stop us from doing everything we can to make a difference. At HOP, we are committed to raising awareness and working toward long-term change—one animal at a time. We are working to inspire others to join the movement and take action to end the suffering of abandoned animals worldwide. We welcome international volunteers, including veterinarians and veterinary students, to join us in this life-saving mission. Your expertise and compassion can make a real difference in the lives of animals who need it most. Volunteers play a key role in our spay/neuter clinics, animal care, and outreach programs. Whether you're an experienced veterinarian or in training, we invite you to be part of the change. HOP has no paid employees and is entirely volunteer-run, so you can be confident that 100% of your donation goes directly toward improving the lives of animals in need.

What We Do

HOP provides medical care and food to neglected animals living on the streets, most of whom are in dire need of attention. Our ultimate goal is to find these animals permanent, safe, and loving homes. Many of the abandoned dogs and cats we encounter on the island live in desolate, uninhabited areas where food, shelter, and safety are scarce. These animals face enormous challenges, including exposure to the elements, disease, and injury, making our work even more urgent.

In addition to providing food, shelter, and medical care, one of our primary goals is to reduce the overpopulation crisis. Through our spay and neuter program, we are working to prevent further breeding and help bring down the number of animals living in these dire conditions. This initiative is crucial to breaking the cycle of abandonment and overpopulation, and we are committed to expanding this effort.

We rely on the generosity of our donors, and 100% of your tax-deductible donations go directly to saving lives and improving the circumstances of animals in need.

Currently, HOP does not have a physical sanctuary and relies solely on a limited amount of foster homes that care for the animals we rescue. However, we are actively working to acquire land and create a permanent haven where we can bring in rescued animals, care for them, and help them heal.

Our Story

HOP’s co-founder, Yvonne Meyer, has spent over 30 years helping street animals in the Caribbean island of Curacao and across South America. With limited resources, Yvonne and her team of volunteers have helped over 3,000 dogs and cats—providing food, medical care, and shelter to animals of all ages, sizes, and conditions, whether they are sick, injured, or simply abandoned.

In 2019, Yvonne and her daughter Sharon launched the "Kuid’e p’e Kuidabu" campaign (translated as “Care for them so they can care for you”), which focused on raising awareness about animal neglect and cruelty on the island. Through school visits and hosting local events, they advocated for government action to address the suffering of street animals and to promote humane treatment.

They also took the cause to the global stage, presenting the campaign at the Miss World 2019 competition, where it was placed in the top 15 of humanitarian causes. Unfortunately, the momentum was stalled by the global pandemic, and local government support for the cause was deprioritized due to limited resources. Despite these setbacks, HOP continues to care for these animals daily with the resources we have, posting updates and appeals on our social media platforms. This has drawn attention from animal welfare advocates worldwide, and we’ve received requests for assistance from others facing similar challenges.
